The multiplayer game for first year students that opened their eyes to sustainability
One student mentioned that they walked into a restaurant with their group for a challenge. He expected the restaurant to do nothing special about sustainability, but then it turned out that all kinds of things were happening. Now he has a side job in that restaurant. The University of Utrecht is committed to sustainability. IJsfontein developed the game Utrecht 2040 which challenges students to develop a vision of sustainability from the perspective of their future profession. This multiplayer game is played on your phone during the introduction week in Utrecht.
First-year students set off with their mentor group through Utrecht, performing challenges related to sustainability. At the same time, they get to know each other and the city better and better.
A PhD investigated the influence of the game and showed that after playing the game, students look at sustainability and their city in a different way. They are more aware of the theme and see more of it in their city than before playing the game.
