Back Street gets young people into reading
Challenge
Reading skills among Dutch youth have declined sharply in one generation. A quarter of young people are at risk of becoming illiterate. This is detrimental: low-literates have fewer opportunities, are less healthy and die earlier than people who can read well. Because reading problems grow throughout education, it affects society as a whole. How do we get young people to read?
On the central square of Back Street, the visitors begin the experience
Solution
Together with the Museum of Literature, we designed the exhibition Back Street. In Back Street, ten important themes for young people have been translated into ten games. About dating, exploring boundaries, standing up for what you think is important... In short: themes that are important to young people.
These games introduce young people to many kinds of texts: from biographies to spoken word and from poetry to graphic novels. Each game has its own space, designed by Moxiedesign. In the Bunker, for instance, you will enter an escape room of adventure stories, and play a dating game in the Limousine.
Impact
Getting young people to read is only possible with the right book. Therefore, after visiting Back Street, everyone will be sent personal book tips based on their gaming experience in the exhibition.
