Sprekend Amsterdam Erfgoededucatie is committed to educating people about heritage and wants to involve children in this. How do we get children interested in heritage and exploring their city?

Solution

IJsfontein developed Groeistad for Sprekend Amsterdam; an educational tool for primary school pupils from Amsterdam. Groeistad encourages children to discover the heritage in their environment in a playful way. Groeistad is an online platform consisting of a map of Amsterdam, this map has many different features.

For example, you can compare historical maps from different times. You can see how Amsterdam has grown since 1560. The maps are full of interesting places, divided into categories. You can view them all at once, or filter them by place, including outdoor art, stories and museum treasures, or by theme, such as living, living together and celebrations and customs.

Impact

Growth City has been used extensively in many primary schools, helping children to discover more about their city. Although Groeistad is designed for children, we are delighted that adults also enjoy getting lost in Groeistad and discovering more about their city. Groeistad has even been nominated for a Geschiedenis Online Prijs and a Museum Educatieprijs.
