HiRO
Experiential learning inspired by judo
Challenge
As a teacher, you are contributing to the development of your students every day. Cognitive and social-emotional. How can you best encourage children's social-emotional development?
As a teacher, you are engaged every day with the development of your class—cognitively, but also socially and emotionally. How do you ensure that each child is empowered?
Solution
Together with Ruben Houkes & Ziggy Tabacznik we developed the teaching method HiRO, an initiative from Schooljudo. This digital yearly program helps children in primary education with their social-emotional development. Judo values are the basis: trust, respect, discipline, resilience, cooperation, mastery and fun. Physical exercises therefore play a major role. An example: the flycatcher exercise, where children -in groups of four- have to stand in front of the class with their eyes closed and try to tap each other after being touched. Because children have to stand with their eyes closed, their self-confidence is increased. Learning by doing: that is HiRO.
HiRO makes every child a hero, and every class into one.
Impact
Children learn together by experiencing. They learn to set boundaries and respect each other's limits, to respect themselves and each other, to trust themselves and others and to work together. The lessons form the foundation of social skills that will benefit children throughout their lives. Children themselves give the program an average of 9.
