Smart board lessons and inquiry-based learning about science and technology

Challenge

From air conditioning to antibiotics and from pocketknife to solar panel: almost everything around us is invented and made. This requires creativity, problem-solving skills and cooperation. Skills you can't practice young enough. How do we help children develop these skills?

Solution

Together with NEMO, we developed a series of four IWB lessons for Maakkunde. With Maakkunde, elementary school children design and experiment. It consists of ten themes about science and technology. 

Each theme comes in two modules: one for grades 1-4 and one for grades 5-8. In each module, children find their own solution to a problem. Can you make a vacuum cleaner? And can you design a raft without getting your feet wet?

Impact

Maakkunde lets children experiment with realistic design challenges. In this way, they practice skills such as creative thinking, and discover how fun and challenging science and technology is.
