The Story of Gardening - interactive elements that stimulate the senses

Challenge

Gardens have played a central role in various cultures over the centuries, each with their own unique story. In "The Story of Gardening" at The Newt Estate in Somerset, you'll discover nine different gardens. From a walled garden in Pompeii to an Islamic oasis; and from a majestic Renaissance garden to a Chinese rock garden. Our goal was to make each garden stimulate your senses in a unique way, bringing the stories of these gardens to life.

Through openings in the hedge, you step into a different world each time.

Solution

We developed the interactive elements of the exhibit. Learn about the science of soil by literally digging in the sand. Listen to stories of animals in the garden; stories of bees, worms, salamanders and birds telling what their influence is and how they use the garden for food and shelter. Solve riddles, look closely and discover what role each animal plays in the garden.

Visitors go on a journey of discovery with an audio tour as their personal guide, which we developed. This audio tour provides them with information appropriate to their location: each garden is accompanied by its own soundscape with sounds of chirping birds and buzzing insects that stimulate the imagination. The audio tour offers several layers of information, allowing you to decide how deep you want to dive into the subject matter.
