Into D'mentia
VR experience shows you what it's like to live with dementia
Challenge
In the Netherlands, an estimated 290,000 people have dementia, 70% of whom live at home. Caring for someone with dementia demands a lot from professionals and family caregivers. It helps if you have more insight into the experiences of people with dementia. This improves care and contributes to longer living at home. How do you create more understanding of this disruptive brain disease?
Experience the confusion, uncertainty, and disorientation that people with dementia face daily.
Solution
The design is based on Into D'mentia: the cabin, in which you step into the shoes of someone with incipient dementia. You are actively engaged: you see, act and think like someone with incipient dementia. This is how you experience the confusion, uncertainty and disorientation that people with dementia experience on a daily basis. Between 2012 and 2022, this touring cabin gave more than ten thousand care professionals, volunteers and caregivers insight into the experiences of people with early onset dementia.
To reach more people, we developed a VR version of the original experience in 2021. Thanks to 4D film technology, the caregiver now really walks through the room with you. Memories float around you. An inner voice responds with the thoughts of someone with dementia.
Impact
This VR experience exposes how confronting it is to lose your grip on the world due to dementia. It helps people empathize with someone with dementia. The effect is better, more personalized care. The experience is part of trainings for family caregivers or care professionals, and now also has a Danish version.
About the next stage of dementia, and the impact of home care on the situation, we developed a second VR experience: Into D'mentia VR 2: The lost me.
